Green Coffee Bean
Green coffee beans are raw coffee beans that have not been roasted. Rich in antioxidants and phenol chlorogenic acid, green coffee beans are mainly used for weight management, lower blood pressure, and have been shown to reduce serum uric acid levels.
In a Health Professionals Follow-up Study (HPFS) analysis, as the number of cups of coffee consumed per day increased, the rate of incident gout decreased. This was attributed to the competitive inhibition of caffeine on xanthine oxidase to reduce uric acid levels (1).
In the Nurses’ Health study, 89,433 female nurses were examined for 26 years on the effect of coffee on gout. Women who drank almost 1 litre or more of coffee per day showed less than half the risk of incident gout (2).
