Celery Seed

Celery is an umbelliferous plant containing many compounds, primarily found in the seed, that can reduce inflammation and uric acid levels.

In a 2019 study, celery seed extract was investigated as a potential treatment for gout in mice. The researchers induced hyperuricemia and found that celery seed extract reduced serum uric acid levels and xanthine oxidase activity, which is the enzyme responsible for metabolizing purines to uric acid. Celery seed also reduced inflammatory markers, which alleviate the swelling in joints and relieve gouty arthritis (2).

In a 2018 study, celery seed extract was also found to significantly decrease serum uric acid levels in hyperuricemic mice. Antioxidant activity was also assessed by the extract’s ability to reduce lipid peroxidation, which was found to be successful, demonstrating celery seed extract can reduce oxidative activity (3).
